Making Mochi part two

Or you make a ball with or without sweet beans inside And if you want to go for a real Japanese taste get some of this KINAKO (soybean flour)
Roll your mochi in the kinako & you have some delicious mochi.
Or here's Kiki making dango san kyodai (3 mochi ball brothers)
Anyway, it's supereasy, but now we are ready for:
STEP 3) Cleanup: Now that your kids have rice gew all over thier hands, cornstarch & bean flour all over the floor etc, it's time for clean up.

Making Mochi part one

Ok, So Angie, pay attention so you can make this for Mom when she's better. It's really easy & should be no prob getting the ingredients at the Japanese food store. Actually any Asian store would have these things because they have mochi in Taiwan, Korea & China.

STEP1 ) Ingredients: Water ( 1 cup), Ask the store guy for Mochi-ko or Dango-ko(glutinous Rice flour), it has to be this kind of flour.(1 cup), Sugar (about 1/2 cup depending on how sweet you like it), dash of vanilla. (Some people use some coconut milk in place of some of the water)

STEP 2) Preparation: Ok So you mix the mochi flour, the sugar & the water in a microwaveable dish until well mixed (no clumps.) If U want the mochi to be pink or green put food coloring in too. This mixture sorta has the consistency of pancake batter.

Cover the dish with saran-wrap & put in the microwave for a few minutes. When you take it out it shouldn't be drippy or move around but be firmly set. (My microwave is strong so only 3 minutes did the trick.) Remove the saran wrap carefully as soon as you take it out but don't burn your finger like I did. This is what it should look like. I'm not sure how long you should cool it down but we were so eager that we just started making balls as soon as we could hold it without burning our hands & it turned out fine.

Next you get a tray ready with some potato starch or cornstarch on it & put some starch on your hands too so it wont be sticky. Take a spoonful of the cooked rice gew & roll it on some starch then take it in your hands to make balls or disks. Work quickly & gently with plenty of starch & don't smash it or your hands will get sticky you'll get a big gewy mess. The cooked mochi when in your hands should feel soft like an earlobe, if it's too rubbery or hard perhaps there wasn't enough water to begin with. One book suggests using water after you cook it, during the kneading process if it's too dry, but it might get really messy.

This is a disk & you can fill it with chunky sweet bean paste rolled into a ball coated with cornstarch, or a strawberry & whip cream, or ice cream once the disk cools down, whatever you like. Then pinch the edges closed.

Summer Holidays

The kids have been home for the last few days. It seems that summer vacation usually starts with a bout of fevers. All of us except daddy have taken a turn in the fever department including me right now. It's really hot these days, so probably the reason we are sick is because of the temperature changes between the heat outside & the air conditioning. But we can't really sleep without it.
Unlike Tom & Hansi's kids we have so much homework, these poor Japanese kids, they study so hard.
Hopefully we'll make it down to Grandma's place & take lots of pictures of our summer.
We love you & hope you are enjoying your summer too.

Vain Post Part 2

The said guillotine
The brush that costs almost as much as a real mic.

Continuing right along in the vain thread, I'd like to write a little bit about make up. Yes, ladies & Gentlemen you will be pleased to hear that I have started to, out of necessity of course, tune into my make up.

Life is all about facing your fears & I have recently purchased an eyelid guillotine. Apparently people use them to enhance your eyes by making your lashes appear longer. OK so I sorta have a lot of practice to do because I am pinching my face under my eyes too. (--The really sensitive part that doesn't need to be stretched any further.)

Concealer: No, my husband is not a wife beater (yet), & I am not related to the giant panda (eyes wise), but I am just genetically predisposed to have dark circles under my eyes. There are a lot of conflicting opinions on youtube on what color concealer you should use under your eyes, I thought it should be the same color as my skin & that's what I bought but people argue between yellow shades & salmon shades & lighter shades, and my next door neighbor who went to make up school said it should just be darker than your foundation, so I'm all confused. Anyway, I'll just use the one I bought for 26 bucks so I don't waste my money.

Brushes: Apparently --& I will be using this word a lot-- you can have all the nice expensive make up in the world but if you don't have the right brushes, your face will come to naught. So, now I wonder if you should just buy really expensive brushes & just use El-cheapo make up. I went out on a quest to the M.A.C store to buy a bunch of brushes but I only came home with one you see, & if anyone steals it I will be so p***ed, because yeah, lets just say, I shouldn't really eat for a week to make up the cost. Anyhoo my "precious" brush is for blush & loose powder which "apparently" helps keep your foundation in place.

Moisturizer: Well, everyone ages so lets just say I now have to use a moisturizer & I'm still figuring out if it was the moisturizer or the fries that made be break out this morning.

Sigh....

So now I'm all pretty, just for today & hopefully I can keep up this vanity for a while.
